Credited as one of the innovators of DSLR video, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II has been used in Hollywood productions and high-end TV productions, such is the level of quality. Regardless of the celebrity status of this DSLR body it has more to offer than just recording high quality moving images, with the ability to take stunning stills within the EOS 5D Mark II’s remit.
First of all, the full frame sensor is the undoubted star of the show, offering a high level of detail thanks to the 21.1MP resolution. With a surface area of equal size to a 35mm negative, the EOS 5D Mark II captures more light than its APS-C siblings allowing for a far larger end product, making cropping and enlarging far less troublesome. The uncompressed Raw files will also provide an archive retaining the highest quality level possible, so nothing is compromised.
The 3.9fps burst rate allows the EOS 5D Mark II to take a large amount of images in a short space of time, regardless of whether it is shooting in the Raw or JPEG format. With this feature a range of movement can be caught, and the 9-point AF system can ensure the subject is kept sharp even if it shifts within the frame.
The ISO range makes the camera far more versatile when the available light is reduced, allowing low-light or fast shutter speed photography to continue. In the absence of a built in flash this also reduces the reliance on an external unit. Beyond the standard 6400 ISO range the EOS 5D Mark II can offer further steps up to 25,600 equivalent, making the sensor even more sensitive.
Having a magnesium alloy frame, with weather sealing, makes the EOS 5D Mark II robust enough to survive a day shooting on location, even if the weather turns wet. In fact there are very few occasions when the EOS 5D Mark II will be found wanting, making it a recommended option for any professional photographer.
