This lens covers wide angle and telephoto ranges, light and small enough for handheld shooting. The two UD elements correct the secondary spectrum in the telephoto range and deliver image quality characteristic of an L series lens.

Retrofocusing and a ring USM enable silent and speedy autofocusing.

It's minimum focusing distance is 0.6 metres which is surprising in a super telephoto lens and the 0.25X magnification enables close up photography.

Interestingly, the zoom ring has an asjustable torque and can also be locked into any position.
