The lens is also the first wide-angle zoom lens in the EF series to combine three aspherical elements with UD glass. This construction keeps the lens to a compact size and corrects any spherical aberrations and distorsion.
UD or Ultra Low Dispersion glass is a lower cost replacement to flourite lenses and offers similar optical performance at a fraction of the cost.
The lens uses internal rear focusing and is also highly resistant to dust and moisture.
