Canon have brought into the 12.1 megapixel PowerShot SX50 HS an amazingly long zoom lens with 50x range. As well as this there is DSLR-like control and functionality plus 4.5-stop Image Stabilisation, Full HD movies and an electronic viewfinder.
Superb 50x Zoom Lens
The Canon PowerShot SX50 HS has an amazingly long zoom range of 50x, which gives the equivalent of a 24-1200mm lens on a 35mm camera. In fact it is the longest zoom on any Canon compact camera to date (Sep 2012). Optical quality is superb thanks to the 13-element lens featuring three UD elements. Focusing is fast and near-silent thanks to the Voice Coil Motor. For an even longer zoom range there is also ZoomPlus which extends the zoom range to 100x with very little loss of image quality.
For such a long zoom range, Canon have also included Zoom Framing Assist. This has a Seek button which makes the lens zoom out and zoom back in when the button is released, and also has a lock function which uses optical IS to keep the subject in the frame.
Canon HS System
The Canon HS System enables images to be captured with exceptionally low noise even in low light. This is made possible by the combination of Canon’s DIGIC 5 processor and a high sensitivity CMOS image sensor. You can stretch sensitivity to ISO 12,800 for fast continuous shooting even in poor lighting and be confident of low noise levels.
The Image Stabiliser manages to stretch shooting by an amazing 4.5-stops as light fades or at long zoom settings. This is accomplished by using both optical IS and intelligently choosing from 7 configurations. The PowerShot SX-50 also has Dynamic IS to counteract rolling motion such as when walking.
Full HD Movies
The Full HD movie mode on this model records in 1080p quality at 24 frames per second with stereo sound. You can also use optical zoom and autofocus while recording.
Choice of Viewing
You can either frame your shots on the electronic viewfinder or on the Vari-angle 2.8” PureColor II VA LCD screen.
The SX50 HS has full and priority mode manual control ie. You can set aperture, shutter, white balance and ISO sensitivity yourself. For highest quality and ease of editing there is RAW recording and a choice of several aspect ratios.
Although there are manual modes, there is also a Smart Auto mode which chooses setup according to 58 variables and can even recognise friends and family in a frame to give the best possible image quality.
